Biographical Note / History | The Scotia was launched for the Cunard Steam Ship Company on 25 June 1861. She was originally planned as a sister ship for the Company's Persia but ended up as a larger version, with an extra deck and many safety improvements. On completion she was the second largest ship in the world. She made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York in May 1862. She had a distinguished career winning the Blue Riband with a Queenstown crossing of 14.46 knots in July 1863 and carrying notable passengers including the family of United States President Theodore Roosevelt. She was wrecked off Guam in March 1904. |
